Past Twilight the back story

Fall: 2011

Twitter Point: Government abuse: Government for a small group of people and not all people is just as bad as to much government.

Tea party people claim that the government is too bloated and excessively involved with ordinary citizens. Certainly at times, especially in the criminal-justice  system government officials have behaved badly at times and put the wrong people in jail or on death row. But my guess is that is not what whips the tea party people into a furor as much as worthless people(minorites) on welfare, public employees getting good benefits though a union and Planned Parenthood where every client walking though the door wants a godless abortion.

What irritates me about government is not so much what the government is doing but what the government should be doing.  A democratic government, aside from protecting its' citizens from foreign threats, has two major obligations: to provide services its' citizens cannot  effectively get elsewhere, to protect its citizens from people(rich and/or criminals) who are in a position to take advantage of them.

There are plenty of examples of the government's failure to act. Without doing any research, I can list some that any TV viewer should know about. How about the Enron scandal. How about Bernie Madeoff bilking several thousand investors. How about the Wall Street scandal where the government when it did get involved it used taxpayers money to save several fat cat investment banks. To this day, I am still waiting for one of those flilthy rich executives to do the 5pm perp walk. How about the agency that was supposed to regulate the oil and gas industry. Tough to do when some of the regulators were literaly sleeping in bed with hired prostitutes supplied by people in this industry. When will I see a perp walk on this? How about the FDA, you seldom hear about this agency on TV, but decisions this agency makes can be a matter of life and death for some people.

The mission of the FDA

"The FDA is responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed the innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get accurate, science-based information the need to use medicines and foods to improve their health." Sounds like some really good stuff: an agency that is scientific and impartial, but is that what the FDA is really about?

In 1993, the FDA approved a drug called 'Trasylol' despite some data that showed this drug inflicted severe kidney damage in animals. Of course, the same kidney damage started occurring in humans. In 2008 after a lot of lawsuits, Bayer took the product off of the American market. Some experts have stated had the FDA taken the product off of the market when the first negative reports about the product came out some 22,000 lives could have been saved. Yes, this is the same FDA that made threats to Cherrie and Walnut growers for promoting the health benefits of their foods. One seldom hears about ex-FDA  executives getting sweetheart jobs with the Cherrie and Walnut industries. Could that be a factor? For a full report on the Trasylor case and other incites on how the FDA conducts business, please click on lef.org    William Faloon of the 'Life Extension Foundation' has stated the following:

"If you ever wonder why medical costs are bankrupting the United States, look no further than the fraudulently approved drugs that permeate the market-place.  When government approved medicines inflict this kind of carnage, the inevitable result is an explosive growth in the numbers of Americans requiring chronic healthcare."

Goverment employees's are just like everyone else. The can be good, bad or ugly depending on their own personalities and the organization they work for. If the agencies they work for have mediocer leaders with hidden agendas that will benefit only the leaders, than from top to bottom of that oganiization everyone will take their cues from the leaders. The only way to change this situation is for voters to hold their politicians accountable for the people they put in charge of these organizations.
